Saranda, in West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, is Asia's largest and densest sal forest. It covers 82,000 hectares and is known for its dense sal tree coverage. Saranda means "700 hills" locally and was historically a vital elephant corridor. The forest also contains mahua and kusum trees. Iron ore mining over decades has caused significant ecological damage in Saranda. This forest is recognized for its biodiversity including the dominant sal species.
