The Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, was formally opened on December 9, 1926, by Lord Irwin, Viceroy of India. It was established to train manpower in mining and applied geology following the 1920 McPherson Committee report and the 1901 Indian Mines Act. The institute initially offered courses in Mining Engineering and Applied Geology under Dr. David Penman. It became a deemed university in 1967 and was converted to IIT (ISM) in 2016.
