A financial market where new securities are issued and sold first
The primary market is where new securities are issued and sold directly by issuers to investors. Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) occur in the primary market. Issuers such as companies or governments receive funds directly from investors. Securities sold here have not been previously traded. The secondary market is where these securities are later traded among investors. The term does not denote a geographic location.
