From epigraphic and literary evidences, we tend to find out about the number and type of officials in the administration of various kingdoms during the early medieval period. Some of the common officers were Senapati, Chief Justice, Foreign Minister-cum-Chief Correspondent and Purohita etc. Some lesser known officials included the officials in charge of the royal household. The term ‘antahpur’ refers to the royal household. Since, kings were the fountain head of all the power and spent considerable time in his antahpur, a close association with the kings made these officers powerful.
