Though, Lord William Bentinck declared Sati an illegal act in 1823, it was still practiced in various parts of the country. In Goa, the Portuguese government also declared the custom illegal, but in spite of this, it prevailed clandestinely in some parts of the state. The Practice of Sati was first banned in Goa in 1515 by the Portuguese Governor Alburquerque.
