The kundi (or kund) is a traditional rainwater harvesting system found in desert regions like Churu, Rajasthan. It is designed to store rainwater in arid areas where water is scarce and rainfall is unpredictable. A kundi is a deep pit, circular or rectangular, dug into or built above the ground, lined with stones or bricks to prevent seepage. Water is collected through channels or rooftops and stored in the kundi, covered to prevent contamination and evaporation. Other traditional systems like johad (check dam) and taanka (small water storage) are also used. It ensures water availability for drinking, irrigation, and domestic use, reducing reliance on groundwater.
