Q. The Juanga Tribe, recently seen in the news, primarily resides in which state?
Answer:
Odisha
Notes: The District Level Committee of Keonjhar in Odisha approved habitat rights for the Juanga tribe under the Forest Rights Act (FRA). The Juanga, also known as Juang, are an indigenous community in Odisha’s Keonjhar district and one of 13 particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs) in the state. They were originally known for their leaf skirt attire but now wear market-bought clothing. They speak Juang (Mundari), part of the Austroasiatic language family.
Their traditional occupations included shifting cultivation, but many have moved to settled agriculture and other income sources like basket weaving and animal domestication. They maintain a traditional political council with a non-hereditary Pradhan as the head.
