The first jury trial in Indian history took place in Madras in the 1660s at the East India Company’s Agent’s Court. Mrs. Ascentia Zawes, a British woman, was tried for allegedly murdering her Indian slave girl. A jury of twelve Englishmen heard the case and found her “not guilty.” This marked the first use of trial by jury in India. The case highlighted early Company justice and the racial inequalities of the colonial system, where British subjects were often favored over Indians in legal proceedings.
