The first metal to be used by humans was copper during the Chalcolithic or Copper Age, which dates back more than 10,000 years ago. Copper is malleable and easy to shape, hence its early adoption. It was largely used for the making of tools, ornaments, and also for trading. The Copper Age led subsequently to the Bronze Age, where copper was alloyed with tin to create a stronger substance known as bronze.
