The fifth Sikh guru, Arjun Dev, was executed by the Mughal king Jahangir. The execution occurred in 1606 after Guru Arjan Dev was imprisoned in Lahore Fort. Guru Arjan Dev was accused of supporting the rebellious son of the Mughal emperor, Khusrau, with money and prayers. Jahangir was outraged by Guru Arjan Dev's support for his son and ordered his execution. Guru Arjan Dev was tortured for five days before his death. His martyrdom is remembered each year on June 16th.
Guru Arjan Dev was the first great martyr in Sikh history. He compiled the Adi Granth, the scriptures of the Sikhs, and completed the construction of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. He also founded the town of Tarn Taran Sahib.
