Painted Grey Ware, an Iron Age culture dated between 1200 BCE - 600 BCE, was first discovered in 1946 by B.B. Lal at the excavation site of Ahichchhatra, UP (near modern Ramnagar). It revealed fine grey pottery painted with geometric patterns in black pigment, associated with the beginning of the 'Second Urbanization' era. Since then over 300 PGW sites have been found across Ganga plains including other significant sites like Hastinapur, Mathura, Vaishali.
