Maithon Dam and Hydel Power Station are built across the Barakar River in Jharkhand. Panchet Dam lies near the confluence of the Damodar and Barakar rivers in Jharkhand-West Bengal border areas. The Maithon Hydel Power Station, the first underground power station in South Asia, generates 60,000 kW. Both dams are managed by Damodar Valley Corporation, controlling floods and producing electricity in the valley system. The Barakar River is a major tributary of the Damodar River.
