Gold-rich tailings with 33 million tonnes of mining waste
Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) is being revived to extract gold from approximately 33 million tonnes of gold-rich tailings, which are mining wastes containing recoverable gold. The closure of KGF mines occurred in 2001. Advances in technology and gold prices have made tailings extraction economically feasible. No significant fresh ore deposits or adjacent mineral reserves are the current focus of revival, nor is imported ore processing part of KGF's revival plan.
