It was spotted by the Chhattisgarh forest department in the forests of Gariyaband district. The department has the "photographic evidence", for the same. It was spotted during phase IV Tiger monitoring programme conducted by Nova Nature Welfare Society. The Mouse Deer was last spotted in state as it was last reported in 1905 as the first evidence of its presence by a British from Raipur province of Central India.
