The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) was established on 7 July 1948. It was India's first multipurpose river valley project. The DVC was modeled after the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) of the USA. The Damodar Valley Corporation Act was passed in March 1948 by the Central Legislature. The Act required joint participation of the Central Government and the states of West Bengal and Bihar.
