Ferguson was assigned to attack Singhbhum in 1767. In March 1766, the East India Company demanded the Rajas of Singhbhum accept submission and pay taxes to avoid conflict. After refusal, Ferguson arrived at Ghatshila on March 22, 1767, to lead the attack, sparking the Dhal Rebellion led by Raja Jagannath Dhal. The rebellion lasted ten years until 1777 when it was subdued.
