The construction of the tomb was started in 1626 and It was completed in 1656. The tomb was designed by Yaqut of Dabul. It is one of the biggest domes in the world. It is famous for its "Whispering Gallery". The name Gol Gumbaj or Gol Gumbadh is derived from the word "Gola Gummata"  which means "circular dome".
