Surendranath Banerjee was dismissed from the Indian Civil Service in 1874. He was the second Indian to qualify for the Indian Civil Service examinations.
Banerjee passed the exam in 1869, but was disqualified due to a dispute over his age. After clearing the matter in court, he passed the exam again in 1871. He was appointed as an assistant magistrate in Sylhet, but was soon dismissed due to a serious judicial error.
Banerjee was often called the "Father of Indian Nationalism". He was elected to the Calcutta Municipal Corporation in 1876. He started the Indian Association in 1876 to push for constitutional reforms.
