The Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 features a total of six schedules which provide varying degrees of protection to numerous species of fauna. These schedules categorize different species based on their conservation status and define the penalties for offenses committed against these species. Poaching, smuggling, and illegal trading of animals listed under Schedules 1 to 4 are strictly prohibited and punishable under this act.
