Jharkhand was formed on 15 November 2000 by the Bihar Reorganisation Act. The new state was created by carving out 18 districts from southern Bihar. These districts belonged to the Chota Nagpur and Santhal Pargana divisions. Initially, the state had 18 districts including Ranchi, Dhanbad, Bokaro, and Palamau. Later, Jharkhand was reorganized to have 24 districts with additions such as Latehar and Ramgarh.
