Born in November 1750, Tipu was the son of Hyder Ali and a great warrior, also known as the 'Tiger of Mysore'. He introduced many administrative innovations during his reign, including the coinage he introduced, the new Mauludi lunisolar calendar and a new land revenue system, which marked the beginning of the development of the Mysore silk industry. Along with traditional Indian weapons, Mysore adopted Western military methods such as artillery and rockets to defeat rivals and counter British forces sent against them.
