Q. Consider the following statements:
- Artillery was used first time in the Indian sub-continent in the battle between Bahamani kingdom and Vijayanagara.
- The struggle between Bahamani kingdom and Vijayanagara Empire for the Tungabhadra Doab had no historical precedence.
Which of the above is / are correct?
Answer:
Only 1
Notes: Wars between the Vijayanagara and Bahamanis were a regular feature. In response to the brutal assault of Bukka I on the garrison of Mudkal in 1367 CE, Bahamani Sultan marched on the Vijayanagara kingdom. He managed to cross Tungabhadra River and became the first Sultan to enter into the Vijayanagara territories. The first recorded use of Artillery in India was in the Battle of Adoni in 1368 CE. The Bahamani king, Mohammad Shah Bahamani used a train of artillery against the Raja of Vijayanagara. The defeated Raja of Vijayanagara retreated into the jungle. So, statement 1 is correct. The interest of the Vijayanagara and Bahamanis clashed in three separate areas: Tungabhadra Doab, Krishna-Godavari delta and the Konkan. The Tungabhadra Doab i.e. the region between the rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra, due to its wealth and economic resources, had been a bone of contention between the western Chalukyas and the Cholas, between the Yadavas and the Hoyasalas, and later between Vijayanagara and Bahamanis. So, statement 2 is incorrect.
