Chola Local Government
Apart from placing the idols of kings and queens within the temple premise, the Chola rulers had also adopted the practice of having inscriptions written on the walls of the magnificent temples built by them e.g. Brihadeshwara temple at Tanjore. These inscriptions give us a historical narrative of their victories and various other activities. E.g. the Uttaramerur inscription which provides valuable insight into the local self-government system of the Chola period was inscribed on a temple wall. Names of officials and different types of taxes are often mentioned on these inscriptions. That is why we know a great deal more about the Cholas than their predecessors.
