Bhimbetka is a Palaeolithic residential site located in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh state, India. It is famous for the rock paintings and rock shelters made by primitive men. These paintings are believed to be from the Palaeolithic to the Mesolithic period. These paintings are the oldest signs of human life in the Indian subcontinent. This site is located 45 km southeast of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. These were discovered in the year 1957-1958 by Dr. Vishnu Sridhar Wakankar.
The Bhimbetka area was declared a site of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India, Bhopal Division in August 1990. After this, in July 2003, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.
