Due to direct rule of British in Kolhapur, the bitterness created among Gadkaris, who were hereditary servants of the Marathas. They were displeased by the British on account of arbitrary methods of land revenue, dismissal from service and placing their land under the supervision of 'mamlatdars'. Thus, the revolt took place in 1844, that was mercilessly suppressed by the British forces.
