Notes: According to the Bengal Village Chowkidari Act, the services of village chowkidar (village night-watchmen) were placed under the control of a village body named as Panchayat. The only duties of these Panchayats were to assess and to collect taxes for the maintenance of the chowkidars or village police. They were not given the power to take care of local development.
