ABHYAS

The ABHYAS is a high-speed aerial target (HEAT) missile. It was developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) of the DRDO (Defence Research Development Organisation) of the Indian Armed forces.

About ABHYAS

The first experimental launch of ABHYAS was held in 2012 at the Chitradurga Aeronautical Test Range. The ABHYAS shall be used as target for evaluation of various missile systems. Abhyas is launched using a twin under slung boosters. These boosters provide the initial acceleration to the vehicle. It is powered by gas turbines to sustain the flight. ABHYAS is equipped with MEMS-based INS (Inertial Navigation System) to navigate along the flight control computer.

Storage

The ABHYAS has a dedicated box for storage and transportation. The box is made of Expanded Polyethylene. It is weather proof, vibration proof and drop proof.

Design

The ABHYAS was designed adopting the design of Lakshya. Lakshya was also designed by DRDO. There are five sections in the fuselage. They are fuel bay tank, nose cone, equipment bay, air intake and tail cone. The air intake, equipment bay and fuel tank are made of steel alloy. And tail cones and nose cones are made of composite material called GFRP, a fibre reinforced plastic. The tail plane and wings of ABHYAS have been derived from Lakshya. In Lakshya, under body wings are used. On the other hand, the wings of ABHYAS are placed on the upper side.
