75th Year of Indian Independence

The year 2022 marked the 75th anniversary of India’s independence from British colonial rule. The occasion was celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervor across the nation, with various events and initiatives organized to commemorate the milestone.

Background

India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, after a long and non-violent struggle led by freedom fighters such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and countless others. Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

To celebrate the 75th year of independence, the Government of India launched the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” initiative. The campaign, which began on March 12, 2021, and continued until August 15, 2023, aimed to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India and its glorious history, culture, and achievements.

The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav featured a series of events, including:

  • Dandi March re-enactment
  • Freedom Struggle exhibition
  • Cultural events showcasing India’s diversity
  • Initiatives to promote indigenous products and self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat)
  • Commemorative coin and postage stamp releases

Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign

As part of the 75th-anniversary celebrations, the Government of India launched the “Har Ghar Tiranga” (Tricolour in Every Home) campaign. The initiative encouraged citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes between August 13 and August 15, 2022. The campaign aimed to invoke a feeling of patriotism and remind people of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters.

Infrastructure Development and Social Welfare

To mark the occasion, the government announced several infrastructure projects and social welfare initiatives. These included:

  • The launch of the National Hydrogen Mission to promote clean energy
  • The inauguration of the Ujjwala Yojana 2.0, which aims to provide free LPG connections to low-income families
  • The expansion of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to provide affordable housing
  • The launch of the Gati Shakti Master Plan to streamline infrastructure development

The main event took place at the historic Red Fort in Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag and addressed the nation. Similar flag-hoisting ceremonies and cultural events were organized in state capitals, districts, and even at the village level.

Many educational institutions, government offices, and private organizations also celebrated the occasion by organizing events, competitions, and workshops to promote patriotism and awareness about India’s freedom struggle.
