Majuli
The Assam Government has recently granted district status to Majuli, a river island in the Brahmaputra River. With this, Majuli has become the first river island district of India. The island is inhabited mostly by Mishing tribal people and is the hub of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture. It was formed due to course changes by the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries, mainly the Lohit.
