World Tuna Day is observed annually on May 2 to promote sustainable fishing and conservation of tuna species. The observance is supported by the United Nations along with governments and non-governmental organisations. In 2026, it is observed on Saturday, May 2. Nearly 7 million tonnes of tuna are harvested annually, making it vital for global food security. Tuna species, especially Bluefin tuna in the Northern Pacific, are threatened by overfishing. Around 51.7% of global tuna catch is currently certified as sustainable. The day emphasises responsible fishing practices and long-term conservation of marine resources.
