World Crocodile Day is celebrated every year on 17 June to raise awareness about the protection and conservation of crocodiles and similar reptiles like alligators. India started its Crocodile Conservation Programme in 1975, and 2025 marks 50 years of this successful effort. India is home to three main crocodile species — the gharial, the saltwater crocodile (salties), and the mugger. Recently, the New Gharial Project was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to boost conservation efforts.
