Bal Gangadhar Tilak
In 1893, Indian freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak started the Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Maharashtra. He praised the festival in his magazine Kesari and dedicated his effort to launch the local festival to a wider area and popularity. The main significance behind celebrating this festival is the reincarnation of Lord Ganesha. Today the festival is celebrated in Hindu communities around the world and is especially popular in Maharashtra and parts of western India.
