Notes: A.O. Hume was the main initiator and founder of Indian National Congress. An experienced British civil servant believed that a platform for Indians to articulate their political demands was needed. Although Mahatma Gandhi, W.C. Banerjee, and Annie Besant were all prominent figures, it was Hume's democratic impulse that drove the creation of the organization in 1885.
