Mohamed Zainuddin Juvale
Mohamed Zainuddin Juvale, originating from Maharashtra’s Konkani Muslim community, established the Kokan Nautical School at Dongri, Mumbai, in 1923 — the first of its kind for the Konkan youth. Despite his modest primary education and initial work as a khalasi, he became the only Indian captain of a merchant ship during his era. His significant contribution helped uplift the maritime prospects of the Konkan region. He received the Padma Shri in 1981, and in 1998, a ship was named in his honour by the Shipping Corporation of India.
