Alexander Kinloch Forbes
Gujarat Vernacular Society was established by Alexander Kinloch Forbes in 1848. A British civil servant and judge in Ahmedabad, Forbes founded the society to promote education and literature in the Gujarati language. It played a pioneering role in establishing libraries, schools, and publishing Gujarati books, including the first Gujarati periodical Vartaman.
