The term ‘Neolithic’ or New Stone Age was coined by British archaeologist Sir John Lubbock in 1865 AD in his book ‘Prehistoric Times’ to characterize the later phase of the Stone Age when ground & polished stone tools came into use alongwith agriculture and domestication of animals. The word is derived from Greek, where Neos means new and lithos means stone. This helped classify the Stone Age into the early/lower Paleolithic, middle/meso-lithic and new/upper Neolithic eras spanning the evolution of human civilization.
