Notes: George Abraham Grierson was an Anglo-Irish linguist and Indian Civil Service member. He proposed the Linguistic Survey of India in 1886. The survey began formally in 1894 and documented 364 languages and dialects of British India. Publication spanned from 1903 to 1928 in 11 volumes with 19 parts. The linguistics survey covered over 8,000 pages, completing after about 30 years of research.
