Historically, Kols are forest dwellers and laborers concentrated in districts like Prayagraj, Banda, and Mirzapur. In UP, British policies led to their SC status, whereas in Madhya Pradesh, they retain ST recognition. They speak dialects of eastern Hindi and are predominantly Hindu.
