The Binjhia tribe, also called Binjhoa or Binjhawar, migrated from the Vindhya Hills in Madhya Pradesh to areas in Jharkhand and Odisha. They are recognized as a Scheduled Tribe by the Indian government. The 2011 census reported about 25,835 Binjhia people, with 14,404 residing in Jharkhand and 11,419 in Odisha. Their traditional oral history traces migration from Kolanagari in the Vindhya Valley to Chhotnagpur and neighboring regions.
