Karnataka has become the first state in India to approve one day of paid menstrual leave per month for all women employees in government and private sectors. The leave amounts to 12 days per year and applies to government offices, educational institutions, factories, and private organisations. Odisha and Bihar have similar policies only for government employees, while Kerala implements it in universities. The policy was approved after extensive consultations, including gynaecologists, psychiatrists, professors, NGOs, trade unions, and employers. Global practices from countries such as Finland and Japan were reviewed before finalising the policy.
