Jharia coalfield, located in Dhanbad district, is India's largest coalfield with 19.4 billion tonnes of coking coal reserves. It spans 280 sq km, hosting 23 underground and 9 opencast mines. Jharia contributes about 44 million tonnes annually, supplying nearly 99% of India's coking coal production. Jharkhand's total coal output was 119 million tonnes in 2020-21. Other coal sites in Jharkhand such as Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, and Daltonganj have significantly smaller reserves and production capacity.
