Tharu is the Scheduled Tribe found in the maximum number of districts in Uttar Pradesh. As per the 2011 census, the total Scheduled Tribe population of Uttar Pradesh is 11,34,273, which is about 0.57% of the state’s total population. Tharu is the most populous among them, with 83,544 members, constituting 77.4% of the state’s total tribal population. Tharus are predominantly located in the Terai region, near the border areas of Nepal. Other recognized tribes in the state include Buksa, Bhotia, Jaunsari, and Raji.
