Notes: Malik Sarwar, a eunuch in service of the Delhi Sultanate under Sultan Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah Tughlaq, founded the Jaunpur Sultanate in 1394. An adroit political figure, Sarwar achieved the title of Malik-us-Sharq, meaning "Lord of the East". As a semi-independent governor, Sarwar's rule marked the start of what would become an influential Sultanate in northern India.
