Natya Shastra, compiled by Bharat Muni, divides musical instruments into four main categories on the basis of how sound is produced.
Tata Vadya / Chordophones- Stringed instruments. Sound is produced by the vibration of a string or chord. Examples include veena, santoor, sarangi, esraj, violin etc.
Sushira Vadya / Aerophones- Wind instruments. Sound is produced by blowing air into an hollow column. Flute is the best example, other examples are shehnai, nadaswaram, gogona etc.
Avanaddha Vadya / Membranophones- Percussion instruments. Sound is produced by striking the animal skin which has been stretched across an earthern or metal pot or a wooden barrel or frame. Examples are tabla, drum, mridangam, pakhawaj, khol, duffli etc.
Ghana Vadya / Idiophones- Solid instruments are said to be the earliest instruments invented by man. These are best suited as accompaniment to folk and tribal music and dance. Example Jhanj, ghatam, gumki, Manjira, Jaltarang, Kanch-tarang, Ghungroo, Ghatam, etc. Manjira has been traced to Harappan civilisations by archaeological excavations.
