Mineral oil or petroleum occurs in anticlines and fault traps. In India, it is found in thesedimentary rock formation. Most of such areas lie in the Assam, Gujaratand off shore areas along the western coast. The plateau region represents the ancient shield of the earth's crust that was formed during pre-Cambrian era. It is generally devoid of mineral oil reserves.
