The Tana Bhagat movement originated from the Birsa Munda revolt (1899-1900) in Jharkhand's Chotanagpur region. Birsa Munda led the Ulgulan movement inspiring the Oraon tribals to start the Tana Bhagat uprising around 1914. The movement opposed British rule, missionaries, alcohol, animal sacrifice, and land alienation. It aimed to revive the Khuntkatti system and spread across Ranchi, Khunti, and Tamar areas as a continuation of tribal resistance against colonial exploitation.
