The Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) is Jharkhand's state animal. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This subspecies is native to mainland Asia and lives in matriarchal herds. The Indian Elephant is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. It appears in Jharkhand's state emblem adopted on August 15, 2020.
