According to the 2011 Census, Ghaziabad is the most densely populated district in Uttar Pradesh with a density of approximately 3,971 persons per sq. km. Its proximity to Delhi and inclusion in the National Capital Region have driven urban growth. By contrast, Varanasi and Lucknow have densities of 2,395 and 1,816 persons per sq. km. respectively, whereas Lalitpur has the lowest density in the state.
