India celebrates National Press Day every year on 16 November, and this year it was observed on 16 November 2025. The day highlights the role of a free and responsible press, often called the fourth pillar of democracy. It marks the establishment of the Press Council of India (PCI) in 1966 under the Indian Press Council Act, 1965. The Act was repealed in 1975 and the PCI was reconstituted in 1979 under a new law. The First Press Commission in 1956 first proposed such a body to protect press freedom. India’s media landscape has expanded from 60,143 publications in 2004–05 to 1.54 lakh in 2024–25. The day is commemorated with National Awards for Excellence in Journalism and the release of a Souvenir.
