Jamshedpur is called the Steel City of Jharkhand due to Tata Steel's plant established in 1912 at Sakchi village. The city is located near the confluence of Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers. Founded by Jamsetji Tata, it produces 11 million tons of steel annually. Jamshedpur is India's first planned industrial city. Bokaro has a steel plant but is not known by this title. Adityapur and Jharia are known for other industrial activities.
